Self Portraits in Northern CA
Share
Last weekend, my ride- or- die -shadow-pup Roo and I took a trip up highway 1 to play in Jenner and Gualala. I love road trips with no real destination or agenda. It allows me to break free from the rigidity of society and scheduling, and expectations so that I can embrace my truest most untamed self,
While on this trip I decided to start playing around with some self-portraits. Admittedly, I don't have much experience with photography, and my phone is super old, but these are obstacles that can be easily remedied, and factually, no one is going to capture the spirit of my designs the way that I could, so it might be in my best interest to take some control over that part of Hollow World as well.
Maybe it was the oversized tank as a beach cover up, maybe it was swigs of whiskey, maybe it was days spent in sun and sea, and nights spent under stars in front of campfires, but despite not having showered or really put myself together in days I was feeling really beautiful, in a grimy, feral kind of way, and I think this photo captured that!
The Eye of the Heart design has its own story, but in general this fit has been one of my favorites for summer. It was actually someone at the Hella Good Market at Drake's in Sacramento that cued me in on styling the men's tanks as a dress and I love the look. Thanks Charlie!!! I dress it up with chunky boots and jewelry for a night out.
Jenner holds a really special place in my heart. I'll leave you with some poetry. Love and Light
Scrying I (Jenner, CA circa 2020)
I drove for miles up highway 1
where everything was too luminous to be stared at directly
and too obvious to be understood
By painting pictures flipped in the wrong direction
and miscalculating equations I formulated myself
Don't laugh
I get a little confused sometimes
On my ninth and last life
It's all broken down for me in a southern fashion on 33rd Street
Where I've been playing with my own reflection in all of that charming imagery
Hand- drawn in the finest lines
Past, present and future tense
Tail in mouth because it's all tangled in metallic shimmer
Farewell
Aye, Eye, I drove for miles
Scrying II (Jenner CA, August 2026)
I drove for miles up highway 1 and tried to make myself feel ok about things I let go 6 years ago
The broken laws, the speared fish, the fleeting moment on the bridge
changing colors in a death bloom
Where I wanted you
I knew I couldn't call you back but
That you'd like the writing and the rune
A salty sting with an ocean view
While the ravens circle overhead
